I am writing this blog to share the experience that I gathered in 1.5 yrs timeframe while getting my son's admission a repute school.Hope it will help the kids prepare for their nursery admissions.

First
make the child familiar with colors, animals, birds, fruits, vegetables,
flowers. Once they are comfortable with these then starts with the questions
and answers.
If
your child shares his/her birthday with a famous personality then get your children
know about it. For example, my son’s birthday is on 2nd October. He
was asked during interaction by one of the reputed schools in Kolkata “You have
your birthday on a very special day. Do you know who else was born on 2nd
October?”
I
have divided the questions sets. Once the child is done with 1st set
completely then proceeds for the next set and so on.
These
are very basic questions that can be asked during interaction:
SET I:

of Wild animals or Domestic animals or Birds or Flowers or Vegetables and ask
the child to identify them.

In general child should know the body parts.
Schools can show them a picture of body part and ask questions
For example: They may point to shoulder in the
picture and ask what this is and the child has to reply this is shoulder.
SET III -
Actions
Child is asked to identify the actions like
pointing to an action; they may ask what the boy/girl is doing.
As a reference I am giving a picture with few
actions. There can be any other actions like brushing, combing, bathing,
exercising etc.
SET IV - WritingSkill -- 4+ age group
At the age of 4, your child should know writing A
to Z
1. Write from A to Z in capital letters
2. Write you name.
3. They may be asked to write missing letters like
A __ C __
E __ G __ I ___ etc
SET V - Numerical
Skill -- 4+ age group
By the age of 4 year, your child should be able to
count from 1 to 100 and writing at least from 1 to 60
1.
Random your child will be asked to count from 1 to
10 or maybe from 60 to 70 or from 41 to 60 etc
2.
Back count from 20 to 0 or 15 to 0 or 10 to 0
3.
Fill in the Missing numbers
For
example: _ 2 _ 4 _ _ 7 _ _ 10
4.
Write the after numbers
For
Example: 5 _, 7 _, 10 _ etc
5.
Alternatively, they may ask what comes after 5,
what comes 7, what comes 10 etc
6.
Similarly, they may also ask about before numbers
like what comes before 5, what comes before 7 etc
7.
Count from 10. (In this case your child should
start counting from 10 and should continue till s/he is asked to stop)
Once the child is done with all the above sets,
s/he is ready to move to the next level. Questions below are not very commonly
asked.
SET VI - Picture
Reading -- This is for 4+ age group
Now a day, many schools ask the child for picture
reading.
They may
show the picture of a birthday party or Hospital/Doctor’s clinic or Zoo etc and
from that picture they will ask different questions.
For example: I am show a picture of a birthday
party
Related questions to this picture:
1. What is this picture about?
2. What is boy doing? (answer: blowing candles)
3. Pointing to the cake, what is this?
4. How many girls/boys are there?
5. How many candles/balloons are there?
6. What are the colors of balloons?
Do similar exercise with pictures like Zoo, Park,
Classroom, Hospital etc.
SET VII
1. What is
your favorite indoor game?
2. What is your
favorite outdoor game?
3. What is
our national animal?
4. What is
our national bird?
5. What is
our national anthem?
6. What is
name of our country?
7. How many
colors are there in our National Flag? What are they?
8. How many
colors are there is a traffic signal? What are they?
9. Have you
seen rainbow?
10. How many
colors are there in the rainbow? What are they?
11. Have you
seen butterfly?
12. Butterfly
is a bird or insect?
13. Can
butterfly fly?
14. Are you a
smart or bad boy?
Etiquettes
Another important thing
that is observed during admission is Etiquettes.
A child should at least
learn to say Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening and Thank You.
When your child enter the
room for interaction with teachers, he or she should say Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening
(as applicable).
If he or she is asked to
sit then they should say Thank You.
Most of the school gives
chocolate to the candidates. Your child should learn to say Thank You after
taking the chocolate.
Sometimes they will be
asked to pick up from a cluster of chocolates or toffees. Teach your child to
pick up only once chocolate or toffee from the lot and then say Thank You.
Shapes
Your child should have idea of some basic shapes.
He or she should able to relate a shape to an object.
They
may ask the child to identify a given shape. They may also ask questions like
what is shape of a ball, egg etc.
